Owen Davies | OddBalls Ambassador
Raising awareness in:
What do you like about being an OddBalls Ambassador?
It’s very rewarding. Some of the pupils are very shocked and surprised at how young Testicular Cancer can affect us men, so to see them listen and take on board the necessary information is rewarding.
It’s great when they ask questions and are genuinely concerned about the issue, but it’s also nice to be able to tell them that awareness of the subject has saved many people, and that with awareness, there is a 98% chance of survival, because being aware of the signs and symptoms is the most important step to a full recovery.
Any highlights or funny stories so far?
It’s very nice when driving the OddBalls car through built-up areas; everyone stops and looks and points at the car. I get lots of people putting thumbs up and a woman next to me in a traffic jam mouthed ‘well done, that’s brilliant’ as she noticed the car, and realised what it was for.
What's your advice on the best time to ‘check yourself’?
It’s most effective in a warm shower, and pretty easy to do then. Also the Check Yourself app gives reminders, so that can be useful if you are forgetful.
When you’re not being an Ambassador, you can be found…
I would like to say being studious and in the library, but more likely I’ll be on a rugby pitch or in the pub.
Favourite sport to watch or play?
#1 item on your bucket list?
I really want to see more of the world, and hopefully will get to travel around Australia, more specifically the east coast.
Best TV show to binge-watch?
Not much of a TV binger, but really enjoying Peaky Blinders at the moment
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A proper burger with sweet potato fries
What's the best advice you’ve ever been given?
My Dad often says, ‘there are no bad days, some days are just better than others’. I think those are pretty strong words to live by.
